AERATION - PROVO, UT

The goal of aeration is to prevent compaction of dirt. This naturally happens when water settles in the lawn or when snow has been sitting on it during winter months. Even things such as walking on your grass and using a lawn mower (because lawn mowers are heavy) will also compact dirt.

One of the main components to healthy grass is making sure the roots have adequate access to water, oxygen, and other nutrients. It is vitally important that the roots are taken care of because they determine the overall health of your lawn. Aeration is the process of systematically piercing holes into your lawn which will allow for your grass roots to have access to those nutrients it needs. Healthy roots lead to vibrate, green, and thick grass. The better the grass, the harder it is for weeds to grow in it.

We recommend that the best time to aerate your lawn is during the “ber” months – September, October, November and December. It is during those months when the soil is going to be cooler and retain more moisture. We also recommend that after a good aeration you keep the plugs of dirt and grass on your lawn, rather than dethatching (or raking) them out. The decomposing of those plugs provides much needed nitrogen to your grass. As you are finishing out the mowing season, use a good mulching blade on your mower to further break up those plugs and add some extra nutrient to your lawn.
